Viva La Vida!

Yes, I finally got the new album! And its amazing! Just listen for yourself on the new playlist. Yes, it is new! Anyways, I've been listening to the CD obsessively and already have my favorites. Let me put them in order:

1. Yes
2. Viva La Vida
3. Violet Hill
4. 42
5. Lost!
6. Death and All His Friends
7. Strawberry Swing
8. Cemeteries of London
9. Life in Technicolor
10. Lovers in Japan

They are actually all really good songs. So putting them in order is like picking your favorite child.

What I really wanted to talk about on this post was not how obsessed I am with Coldplay. It was to discuss the meaning of the lyrics to the title track Viva La Vida.

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sweep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
(Ohhh)

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
(Ohhhhh Ohhh Ohhh)

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh

I was looking on a message board and the people on the board were debating who the song is portraying. And I heard two very good arguments(I suggest that you read the lyrics again and think of one of the two arguments and contemplate it, then read them again for the next argument).

1. The person is Satan
2. The person is King Richard the Lionhearted, who conquered Jerusalem during the Crusades.

As you can see, they both work very well. Some thought it was George Bush or Napoleon, but I don't think its either of them. They aren't as solid as an argument. Anyways, I also want to promote the depth of Coldplay lyrics. They aren't just lovey dovey heart break songs. They make you think. In fact, this WHOLE album makes me think. All of their music makes me think! And I love that! The words have meaning and are there for a reason. Viva La Vida is only one example. Aren't convinced? Check out some lyrics sights and look up all of Coldplay's songs. You won't find one song that's simple. Well, maybe one. I'll not say they're perfect just yet.

Also, check out their video for Violet Hill on YouTube. Its pretty good. They also have a funny Politicians dancing video, and that might be on YouTube. Not sure, though. I saw it on their website, so if you can't find it on The Tube, check out their website coldplay.com.

Burn me a copy. NOW!

Personally, I think the song is about me.

Okay, at least let me borrow it. Or something.

Oh, here's something from Wikipedia:

"Q magazine asked Chris Martin about the line "I know Saint Peter won't call my name" sung in "Viva la Vida". Martin replied: "It's about… You're not on the list. I was a naughty boy. It's always fascinated me that idea of finishing your life and then being analyzed on it. And it's that runs through most religions. That's why people blow up buildings. Because they think they're going to get lots of virgins. I always feel like saying, Just join a band (laughs). That is the most frightening thing you could possibly say to somebody. Eternal damnation. I know about this stuff because I studied it. I was into it all. I know it. It's still mildly terrifying to me. And this is serious."

wow. See, even everyone's great assumptions are wrong! Thats how deep and thoughtful Christ Martin is! Thanks for that, Steven. And as soon as I get a blank CD I'll burn you a copy. Its truly their greatest achievement, I think, although "Fix You" is still the greatest song by them.

Yay Coldplay! They are getting closer to tying for fist place for my favorite band. I still love Muse just a little more.

You are forcing me to think about music, whereas I prefer to listen to things that make me lose braincells.

When is the concert???

Sorry, Beckie. I know you just love losing those braincells. And the concert in November 13th. Too far away. It was originally going to be on July 9th, but they weren't going to be finished with the production in time. So sad.
